The first contact with Maori was discovered by Abel Tasman when he discovered new Zealand. He arrived on the coast of New Zealand in December 1642. He and the English did a battle with a group of Maori on South Island.
In 1840 the treaty of Waitangi was officially signed by both Maori chiefs and English pakeha lead by the crown.
After the treaty was signed the pakeha population was way bigger than the Maori population new Zealand was overcome by pakeha.
Today we have holidays to separate the Maori culture like Waitangi day witch was the treaty that brought the Maori and the Europeans together and Maori language week was the Maori went to parliament and said the Maori language needs to be an official language in New Zealand and now it is.
